Impact of ligand independent ERβ signaling on human Th17 cell differentiation
Sex hormone receptor signaling has been implicated in the female sex bias found in many autoimmune conditions, including Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Estrogen Receptor beta (ERβ) is expressed in T lymphocytes, and its expression is reduced in active SLE, suggesting a potential role in immune regulation. Here, we investigate the function of ERβ signaling in human T-cells and define its contribution to pathogenic T-cell phenotypes associated with SLE. We used a pharmacological inhibitor approach (PHTPP) to assess the role of ligand-independent ERβ signaling in human in vitro Th17 cell differentiation and compare results to transcriptional changes in Th17 cells in SLE.
