Data Access Committee for the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
Data requesters will need to provide (a) the name and qualifications of the responsible person, (b) publicly viewable research profile (e.g., GoogleScholar, MyNCBI, ORCID) to show that the requester has the necessary capacity to manage the data; (c) envisaged research question and brief research protocol; (d) measures that will be taken to protect the data (e) commitment to use the data according to the conditions authorisation given. A formal data transfer agreement will need to be signed between the University and the responsible person’s institution. The requester will need to provide evidence of approval from an appropriate ethics committee/review board. If necessary, we may require further ethics approval. Data requests that directly compete with the existing research projects of the data provider and/or other individuals who have been granted access to the data are welcome but may be subject to an embargo period. Publications using the data would be required to acknowledge the source of the data and funders. In general, the data providers would not be authors on any papers unless a collaboration is specifically agreed to.
