DNA was extracted from oral wash samples, using the PowerSoil Pro kit.   To study environmental and genetic causes of young onset breast cancer, we recruited women who had been young when recently diagnosed (under age 50 and within 4 years of enrollment), and had been identified as potentially eligible by a sister who was already participating in the ongoing Sister Study. The unaffected sister had already provided consent, questionnaire-based information and DNA (blood-based) when she enrolled in the Sister Study. Her case sister then provided comparable questionnaire-based information and DNA via a mail-back saliva collection kit. To enable family-based analyses, parents were also asked to (only) provide consent and a saliva sample. Because the cases were young-onset, most parents were alive, but unavailability of the parents was not a basis for exclusion. The study was funded in part by Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

  The aim of this study is to investigate mitochondrial dysfunction in skeletal muscle as a potential biomarker for identifying a distinct subtype of Parkinson’s disease (PD) characterized by mitochondrial complex I (CI) deficiency (CI-PD). Based on previous post-mortem findings, the study hypothesizes that widespread CI deficiency is present in a subset of PD patients and could be detectable in clinically accessible muscle samples. By analyzing mitochondrial function in muscle biopsies from individuals with PD and healthy controls, the study seeks to explore the extent of mitochondrial dysfunction in PD and identify a stratification marker for future diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.   The goal of this study was to identify genetic risk factors for drug-induced prolongation of the QT interval (diLQT) and the ventricular arrhythmia torsades de pointes (TdP). We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) focusing on subjects with a history of long QT and/or TdP after taking medication. Controls for this study were individuals with a history of cardiac arrhythmias who had begun treatment with potentially QT-prolonging antiarrhythmics. An additional control group of normal volunteers were given ibutilide, a drug with documented proarrhythmic properties. All study participants were recruited and treated/evaluated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This study was conducted by the Pharmacogenomics of Arrhythmia Therapy subgroup of the Pharmacogenetics Research Network, a nationwide collaboration of scientists studying the genetic contributions to drug response variability. Genotyping was performed by the RIKEN research institute in Japan using the Illumina 610 Quad Beadchip platform.
