• The genetic structure of Norway

  The aim of the present study was to describe the genetic structure of the Norwegian population using genotypes from 6369 unrelated individuals with detailed information about places of residence. Using standard single marker- and haplotype-based approaches, we report evidence of two regions with distinctive patterns of genetic variation, one in the far northeast, and another in the south of Norway, as indicated by fixation indices, haplotype sharing, homozygosity and effective population size. We detect and quantify a component of Uralic Sami ancestry that is enriched in the North. On a finer scale, we find that rates of migration have been affected by topography like mountain ridges. In the broader Scandinavian context, we detect elevated relatedness between the mid- and northern border areas towards Sweden. The main finding of this study is that despite Norway’s long maritime history and as a former Danish territory, the region closest to mainland Europe in the south appears to have been the most isolated region in Norway, highlighting the open sea as a barrier to gene flow into Norway.

• POPCOL: population-based colonoscopy.

  PopCol is a cohort study in Stockholm, Sweden that includes a data-rich set of individuals with data available from bowel symptoms questionnaires, gastroenterology visits and biospecimens (genotype and 16S sequencing from blood and stool samples, respectively). Genotyping was carried out using the Illumina HumanOmniExpressExome-8v1 arrays at the SciLifeLab NGI facility in Uppsala, Sweden. Fecal DNA was extracted from samples kept at -80°C using Qiagen 5 QIAamp DNA Stool Mini Kits and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (in the V1-V2 hypervariable region). This was performed on the Illumina MiSeq platform at the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB) in Kiel, Germany. Of these, six PopCol participants were PPI users and 12 used antibiotics. The study was approved by the local Committee of Research Ethics (Forskningskommitté Syd) at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, in November 2001.   The Estonian Biobank is the population-based biobank of the Estonian Genome Centre of University of Tartu. The biobank is conducted according to the Estonian Gene Research Act and all participants have signed broad informed consent. The cohort size is currently 51,535 people from 18 years of age and up. Metabolite concentrations (over 110; NMR and MS) are available for about 12,000 subjects; metabolic follow-up has been done for more than 2000 donors. GWAS has been performed on 20,000 subjects with different Illumina arrays and 2,500 have whole exomes and 2,400 full sequence. The data for the 2,400 fully sequenced samples is available through dbGaP.

  This study investigates the total RNA expression profiles of fresh-frozen ovarian tumors, providing a comprehensive analysis of 112 samples from 111 women in Sweden, two samples being replicates. The dataset includes 18 benign and 94 malignant tumours, collected as part of the U-CAN initiative from Uppsala Biobank. The sequencing data offers valuable insights into ovarian tumour biology and can be used to enhance understanding of tumour classification and molecular characteristics.

• The Cardiogenics study

  Cardiogenics is an European collaborative project, it started in January 2007 and was funded by the European Commission through its Sixth Framework Program (reference LSHM -CT-2006-037593) until 2011. It involved several laboratories from France (INSERM UMRS937), Germany (Lübeck University; Regensburg University), United Kingdom (the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute; University of Leicester) and Sweden (Uppsala University Hospital) and was coordinated by a management group composed of scientists from these different institutions. Under the coordination of the management group the laboratories are still developing projects using Cardiogenics data sets. As part of the Cardiogenics project, RNA from monocytes and macrophages of 363 patients with coronary artery disease and 395 healthy individuals was prepared and genome-wide expression was assessed in both cell types using the Illumina HumanRef 8 v3 Beadchip . The DNA of all these individuals was genotyped using the Human 610 Quad custom arrays. Both data sets were used to conduct eQTL analyses. A subsample of subjects included in an allelic-imbalance substudy were also genotyped using the Illumina Human Custom 1.2M array. Detailed description of these datasets can be found in Shah S et al.
