Children born with DS have a substantially higher risk of developing childhood leukaemia. Approximately 10% are diagnosed with a preleukemic condition at birth; transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM). Of these, 20% - 30% of cases may progress to myeloid leukaemia associated with DS (MLDS) by the age of five. We are interested in directly characterizing the transcriptional changes underlying this stepwise development of TAM and MLDS.
