  Study designed to further our understanding of the pathogenesis of asthma exacerbations in children. Children enrolled in the study (n=217) were all asthmatic and primarily Hispanic white.   While CD4+ T cells are involved in autoimmunity, how they contribute to the pathogenesis is unclear due to their cellular heterogeneity. Here, to analyze the heterogeneity, we utilized decomposition-based transcriptome characterization for evaluating non-discrete subsets of CD4+ T cells in addition to canonical clustering strategies. This approach identified 12 independent transcriptional gene programs governing whole CD4+ T cell heterogeneity, which can explain the ambiguity of the canonical clustering.
